وقتی سخن از مددکاری می‌شود بسیاری از افراد به یاد زندان‌ها یا پرورشگاه ها و افرادی که به نام مددکار در دفتر یا واحد مددکاری فعالیت می‌کنند. اما حرفه مددکاری به فعالیت در ان مراکز محدود نمی‌شود.

مددکاری اجتماعی، یکی از رشته‌های کاربردی است که فارغ‌التحصیل آن باید بتواند در مراکز مختلف با استفاده از روش‌ها و تکنیک‌هایی که آموزش دیده است،
وارد زندگی انسان‌هایی شود که به هر دلیل اجتماعی، اقتصادی، فرهنگی و خانوادگی دچار مشکل شده و نمی‌توانند مشکل خود را به تنهایی حل کرده و یا منشأ مشکل را تشخیص بدهد
در مورد هدف مددکاری می توان گفت هدف رشته مددکاری این است که به افراد نیازمند به خدمات اجتماعی کمک کند تا مشکلات خودشان را بشناسندسند و راه حل آن را پیدا کنند.

[/font][/b]یک مددکار باید دارای توانمندی‌های روحی خاصی باشد؛ یعنی باید روحیه‌ای قوی داشته باشد تا بتواند مشکلات و معضلاتی را که در زندگی انسان‌ها می‌بیند، تحمل کند که افراد زودرنج و بسیار حساس و عاطفی به درد این رشته نمی‌خورند.
در ضمن یک مددکار نباید در گفتگو و ارتباط برقرار کردن با دیگران دچار مشکل شود و در نهایت یک مددکار باید خود را به خوبی بشناسد چون اگر خود را نشناسد، نمی‌تواند به دیگری شناخت بدهد و او را کمک کند.
اگر به جامعه و مشکلات آن اهمیت داده و می خواهید تغییرات مثبتی در جامعه خود ایجاد کنید، شغل مددکار اجتماعی می تواند گزینه خوبی برای شما باشد.
پیچیدگی ها و شرایط خاص زندگی امروزی، چالش ها، مشکلات و فشارهای روانی زیادی را برای جوامع و انسان ها اسجاد کرده است. برای رفع این مشکلات، حفظ سلامت روحی افراد و داشتن جامعه ای سالم، خدمات مددکاران اجتماعی ضروری و لازم است.
مددکاری اجتماعی حرفه‌ای است که در آن مددکار کمک می‌کند که مددجو (یک فرد یا گروه یا جامعه) مشکل خود را شناخته و به توانایی‌های خود پی ببرد و با استفاده از منابع و امکانات موجود در جهت حل مشکل خود بر آید. در واقع مددکاری اجتماعی عبارت از مجموعه ای متشکل از تدابیر و مشاوره و فعالیتهای حرفه ای است که در قالب نهادها، سازمانها و موسسات رفاهی توانبخشی، اجتماعی، فرهنگی و تربیتی عرضه می شود تا با ایجاد تغییر و دگرگونی مناسب در شرایط مادی و معنوی افراد و اقشار جامعه زمینه بهزیستی رشد و تعالی آنها را فراهم آورد.
