اتم‌ها، مولکول‌ها یا یون‌هایی که یک سیستم شیمیایی را تشکیل می‌دهند، می‌توانند حرکت‌هایی مختلف، از جمله انتقالی، چرخشی و یا ارتعاشی داشته باشند.
هرچه حرکت مولکولی یک سیستم بیشتر باشد، آنتروپی آن سیستم نیز بیشتر خواهد بود.
یک سیستمِ کاملا منظم‌شده تنها یک حالت را می‌تواند اختیار کند و آنتروپی آن نیز برابر با صفر است.
تنها سیستمی که می‌تواند این حالت را داشته باشد، یک کریستال کامل منظم است که در دمای صفر مطلق (0K) قرار گرفته است.
در این وضعیت، مولکول‌ها، اتم‌ها و یون‌ها به‌طور کامل ثابت شده و هیچ گونه حرکتی را تجربه نمی‌کنند. در شکل زیر حرکت‌هایی نشان داده شده که یک ترکیب می‌تواند داشته باشد.
