مته وسیله ای است در انتهای رشته حفاری به منظور کندن زمین بسته می شود.
    مته جزء اصلی دستگاه حفاری محسوب میگردد.زیرا تجهیزات اصلی برش وسایش سنگ ها وسازند هاست وبخش فرسایش پذیر بوده ودر مقایسه با سایر تجهیزات از عمر کمتری برخورداراست. زیرا بعد از مدتی کارکردن کند میگردد.وبرای تعویض آن عملیات حفاری متوقف نیز میگردد.
مته حفاری اولین ابزاری است که جهت حفر چاه های نفت و گاز مورد استفاده قرار می گیرند.این وسیله در اثر چرخش رشته حفاری به حرکت در آمده و باعث سوراخ کردن زمین می شود.
مته ها بر اساس 3 اصل زیر طراحی میشوند:
—        مته‌هایی که باعث تراشیدگی و ریزشدن سنگها می‌شوند.
—        مته‌هایی که با عمل مماسی و عمل برشی موجب نفوذ در سنگ می‌شوند.
—        مته‌هایی که با ایجاد بریدگی و خراش‌اندازی موجب نفوذ در سنگ می‌شوند.
از نظر کاربرد نیز مته ها به 2 دسته تقسیم میشوند:
—        مته های حفاری
—        مته های مغزه گیر
بر اساس استاندار سایز مته ها به شرح زیر میباشد:
