هنگامی که دو نفر با یک دیگر صمیمی می شوند، احتمال بیش تری وجود دارد که تعارض را تجربه کنند؛ چراکه در خلال یک ارتباط خصوصی، عادت ها یا تفاوت ها بارزتر می شوند و می توانند آزاردهنده باشند.هرچند تعارض، برای رابطه ی زناشویی خطرناک نیست، چگونگی مواجهه ی همسران با آن می تواند خطرساز باشد.

تعارض، نوعی کشمکش و درگیری است. وقتی برای یکی از همسران، انجام کار، گفتن حرف و یا داشتن فکر و احساس در زمینه ی مسأله ای خاص، مهم و ارزش مند باشد و برای دیگری چنین نباشد، همسران دچار اختلاف سلیقه یا اختلاف نظر می شوند و این، «تعارض» در ارتباط و فرآیند تفاهم را نشان می دهد. ناتوانی در تحمل نظر یا سلیقه ی مخالف، می تواند پیامدی فراتر از مشاجره ی ساده و گذرا داشته باشد و مجموعه ای از الگوهای رفتاری بین زن و شوهر ایجاد کند که نتیجه ی آن خصومت و روابط آشفته باشد.

تعارض همسران ممکن است زمینه های آشکار یا پنهان داشته باشد؛ که به مهم ترین آن ها اشاره میشود：

-تغییر شخصیتی

- پیشامد رویدادهای ناخوشایند

-کاهش جاذبه های ظاهری

-تفاوت های اعتقادی مذهبی

-تفاوت آداب و رسوم

-اختلاف نظر در مسایل اقتصادی

-چگونگی تفریح و مسافرت

-بی علاقگی به همسر

-تقسیم نامتوازن قدرت

-بی توجهی به نیازهای اساسی...
